March 17 is the day for the wearing of the green. And if you have been living under a cultural rock, let it be known to you that March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day when the streets, offices and homes in many countries of Europe and North America turn into seas of green in honor of the patron saint of everyone with even an iota of Irish blood or a fragile thread to anything and anyone Irish. Oh, yes, indeed, if there is a day for being green, March 17 is that day!

Speaking of being green, you will definitely have a one-of-a-kind St. Patrick’s Day party when you incorporate touches of being green in the environmental sense. Here are practical ideas how to go about this truly green party.

Invitations

Of course, green invitations must be sent out, of which there are many ways to achieve them. For one thing, you can use organic or recycled paper in white that you can then decorate with figures of green shamrocks and leprechauns, trees and plants. For another thing, you can just send out e-mail invitations to your planned guests. You will be minimizing your expenses for the paper and the stamp, not to mention the gas costs going to the post office, and you will also be lessening your efforts in manually writing and mailing all of these invitations.

Food

You can always prepare separate menus that showcase the best of each green aspect. On one hand, you can serve organic and natural foods from your local farmers. Think vegetable and fruit salads, savory mini-tarts, bite-size vegetable-based hors d’oeuvres and elegant canapes. Wash them down with organic wine or fresh fruit juices. On the other hand, you can offer traditional Iris fare like Irish soda bread with raisins, corned beef and cabbage, Irish brown bread, Irish cream chocolate mousse cake and Guinness beer. Or better yet, you can work with a professional chef to produce a fusion of these cuisines. This way, you can introduce new foods to your guests, which ought to leave a very good impression.

Decorations

You can be creative with your decorations from the ceiling hangings to the table settings, of which these tips will start the imagination ball rolling:

• String streamers of reusable curtains or organic paper in the colors of the Earth and of the Irish – greens, gold, yellows, and reds.
• Instead of artificial flowers, place potted plants as table centerpieces, which can host the proverbial pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.
• Place green balloons with shamrock figures in strategic places around the venue.
• Use fruits and vegetables as place card settings with a shamrock or two, which can also act as the party favors.

To top it off, you can plan a tree-planting activity. This way, you can bring home the point of the party while ensuring that everybody has a good time while partying the night away later.

So, who says that you cannot combine greens together? With St. Patrick’s Day, you have yet another excuse to go green with Mother Earth.
